Greenfield: Willow Run

Willow Run is a small (6 stall) natural boarding facility. Our stalls are 12'x12' with attached paddocks, no doors, and 4' walls so even when horses come in, they are able to access each other and the outdoors. There is a Paddock Paradise for group turnout, and horses are often out 24/7. Our feed program is based on grass & grass hay at 2% of body weight, in slow feed hay nets. Nets are hung around the Paddock Paradise, with extra nets so all horses have access. We add a ration balancer, a probiotic, and loose salt. We have alfalfa pellets if your horse doesn't eat enough hay and grass to maintain body condition. Concentrate is fed in stalls so your horse gets the correct amount for their individual need. Owner is a certified veterinary nurse with over 40 years horse experience, and 15 years boarding horses. We strive for a comfortable, co-operative environment, with access to protected trails a short distance down the road. Willow Run is the perfect home for trail riders, retired horses, and traumatized horses requiring a natural, low-stress environment. Hoof trimming by owner available. Bear Lake: Fjern Fields

Friendly Atmosphere - All ages, abilities, and backgrounds are welcome
Natural Boarding - Allow your horse to live like a horse

What will life be like for your horse at Fjern Fields?
Housing:
In our barn, we have 12x12 box stalls available for each horse, a shared tack room, feed space, and grooming area. However, the horses primarily use the stalls only for morning and evening individualized feedings, or if a horse is on stall rest at the direction of a veterinarian. Typically the horses prefer to stay out in the open, even in inclement weather.

At night, we bring the horses into a medium-sized paddock, and during the day, they are turned out onto grass pastures. This allows the horse to have complete freedom of movement in fresh air 24/7. The stalls and paddock are cleaned daily.

Feeding:
Typically horses either have access to hay in slow feeders or access to pasture. Our turnout pastures are rotated weekly and allowed to rest. All horses have 24/7 access to clean, fresh water and mineral salt.

We feed quality grass hay and encourage the use of soaked beet pulp (free of molasses) for morning and evening individual feedings. Because we have sandy soil, we provide a monthly sand clear cleanse and a seasonal feed through fly control. We are happy to distribute any additional owner supplied feed or supplement.

During their individual feedings, each horse is visually inspected for injury. Also we do a quick brush down and apply fly spray and fly masks as provided by the owner at this time.

Exercise:
Movement is extremely important for the health of the horse. Movement is encouraged by living in a herd and by the design of our pastures.

Next to the Fields are wooded trails. We also have an outdoor riding area large enough to fit a standard size dressage arena or a full stadium jump course, and are constructing a cross country jumping course. We will be building a set of arena jumps, barrels, cones, obstacles, and a round pen in the future.

People:
Owners that choose to board their horses with us appreciate our commitment to Natural Boarding. We welcome all riding disciplines and experience levels. However, we will not tolerate abusive, cruel, or neglectful practices - period.

We understand that lives are busy and occasionally we can't see our equine friends very often, but we ask that you make the commitment to visit and groom your horse a minimum of once per week.

Horses:
Before a new horse comes to live with the herd, they must have standard immunizations up to date and a current negative Coggin's. As a new horse is introduced to his herd, there may be a few squabbles as the horses sort things out. We will only interfere if a horse's health or safety is at risk.

For a Natural Board setting, horses ideally should be kept barefoot and without a blanket if possible. If your horse is clipped during the winter to accommodate an active exercise program, he should have a blanket. The weather in Michigan can be very cold, and if your horse's natural coat isn't enough protection from the cold, he should have a blanket. (In these situations we recommend a blanket with a "Hug" style closure so they can still comfortably eat from ground level.)

If your horse currently wears shoes, we would be happy to help you transition him to a barefoot trim. We strongly recommend your horses be barefoot for health reasons, but we also realize that it may not be possible. We understand this and are willing to work with you to ensure the best living situation for your horse and the other horses in our care.

For more information, contact Ginger Wisseman at 231-889-0132.
Your horse will thank you.

Mansfield: 7 Springs Farm

7 Springs Farm can be your horse's dream retirement getaway, whether you have a trusty trail horse, a show horse, an eventer, or a racehorse who is ready for retirement! Our retirees enjoy their days out in lush pastures with their herd mates, and if you choose, your horse can have a stall for nights with plenty of shavings. We give every horse lots of love & attention!

Each of our turnout pastures are between 10 and 50 acres on our 640 acre farm. We have excellent grass forage almost year round, and for the winter time we bail our own quality organic hay that is an orchard grass/clover mix.

Horses are grouped depending on their personality and activity level. The number of horses per pasture is anywhere from 3 – 7. Once your horse has bonded with a group of horses we try not to separate them.

Our location is ideal for the retired horse because the Ozarks have milder winters than the north and cooler and less humid summers than the south. Here at 7 Springs Farm, your horse can be a horse again!

Statesville: New Hope Stables & Campground - Where the Horse comes First

At New Hope Stables we keep the horses as close to their natural life way as possible by implementing Paddock Paradise. There are corridors and feeding stations throughout our 25 acres to keep the horses moving and socializing all day which promotes a great spirit, mind and body. This also allows us to control the pasture turn out time to minimize the risk of founder due to sugars and toxins in grass. Hay is fed year round. Our horses are all bare foot due to me being a certified Natural Hoof Care professional with the AANHCP and Liberated Horsemanship.

We have 6 pull thru camp sites with bathrooms, showers, electric and water hook up. All campers and their horses are seperated from the main barn.

Midland: Horse Around Acres

Our boarding facility was designed with the horse's health and well being in mind. We believe that a horse is healthier and happier in an environment that is as close as we can make it to what nature intended. Your horse can make the decision where the most comfortable spot is (in the sun, away from a draft or in an aisle with a breeze). Who could know better than the horse? Although this may mean the horse may be more difficult to catch and groom, we believe the benefits to the horse's health and attitude outweigh these inconveniences. The effects of COPD can and have been diminished or eliminated. Therefore, except when necessary (at feeding, if a horse is recuperating or if the farrier or vet is coming), the horses are in a constant "free-choice state." Our horses can come and go, in and out of their stalls, as they please. We do close them in stalls while feeding to make sure no horse gets pushed out of his food.

Additional features:

  • 60' x 120' indoor ring
  • 100' x 124' outdoor ring
  • 70' diameter round pen
  • 10' x 12' stalls
  • LOTS of trails
  • Safe fencing
  • Fly predators released for fly control
  • 5 separate herd groups, 2 with rotated pastures
  • Water heated in winter
  • Natural hoof care practitioner
  • Main hay storage away from barn (dust and fire hazard)

Horse Around Acres has been in business since 1986--continuously under one ownership. Owners live on premises.
